Friday, 1/9: Des Moines IPA 20th Anniversary Celebration
January 09, 2026 12:00 PM until January 09, 2026 11:00 PM
Join us in celebration of John Martin's first homebrew of Des Moines IPA 20 years ago in the Confluence Brewing taproom on Friday, January 9th!
Twenty years ago, craft beer in the US was just beginning to take off. Brewers in the early 2000s embraced experimentation, pushing boundaries and chasing ever-higher IBUs. A West Coast IPA arms race was underway, defined by aggressive hopping and bold flavors. Against this backdrop, John Martin home-brewed his first batch of Hop Head Extreme. A Midwestern take on the style, balancing intense hop character with smooth caramel malt, creating a well rounded and approachable IPA. It was a big hit with other home brewers at the Jimmy Carter Happy Hour, inspiring John to keep brewing and refining the recipe. When he opened Confluence Brewing in 2012, he launched with Hop Head Extreme as his flagship… except with a less kitschy name, Des Moines IPA. Twenty years after that first brew, Des Moines IPA endures thanks to the love and support of fans like you.
We'll have home brewers creating the original DSM IPA recipe, memories to share & a golden 20th Anniversary DSM IPA collector's can to purchase & add to your collection!
Join us in raising a hop forward, but well balanced glass of classic IPA in celebration. Cheers to twenty more years of great beer!
Taproom hours on Friday, January 9th, are noon to 11pm.
